Factors Influencing Old People`s Life Satisfaction

Abstract
This study was conducted to examine factors which influence old people¡¯s life satisfaction. The subjects of this study were 1,400 persons who were over 60 years old. Data were collected from May 1, 2004 to June 30, 2004 The results of this study can be summarized as follows. The average score of their life satisfaction level is 3.01*0.40 points on the basis of 5 points(60.2 points on the basis of 100 points). The satisfaction level is higher in the groups of male, younger persons, persons living with their daughters, highly educated persons, Christians, employed persons, and having more monthly pocket money. The satisfaction level of health condition is 2.76i0.62 points on the basis of 5 points(55.2 points on the basis of 100 points). The score of activity of daily l~feis 3.48i0.52 points on the basis of 5 points(69.6 points on the basis of 100 points). It is higher in the groups of male, 60 to 64 years old, living with their spouses, graduating from middle school. According to the results of crosstabs, there is significant difference between the distribution of l~fes atisfaction level and the distribution of health condition, activity of daily life, stress control level, and health management level. The distribution of low level group of health condition was 54.9% in the group of low life satisfaction level. According to the results of multiple regression analysis, the life satisfaction level is significantly affected by ;he variables of health condition, stress control, health management, average monthly pocket money, marital status, and religion. As shown in the above results, the old people¡¯s satisfaction level of life and health condition was low. The factors which significantly influenced were health management, health condition, economic status, marital status, stress control, and religion. Therefore, it is necessary to provide health education for the elderly in order to increase their satisfaction level of life and health. The government and related organizations must make efforts to develop education program of manpower for older people¡¯s health management.
